・・・Abdulmutallab boarded Flight 253 with about 80 grams of the chemical PETN hidden in his underwear. This amount could very well have punctured the aircraft’s side wall・・・50 grams of the chemical could have this effect.・・・
There’s also no guarantee that the 80 grams of PETN would have popped a hole in the fuselage in the first place. The・・・test described above evaluated an unobstructed blast, with the chemical coming in direct contact with metal. In the case of the Christmas bombing attempt, there may have been some interference. Abdulmutallab had a window seat, but he does not seem to have held the explosive directly up against the side of the plane. Instead, it seems he strapped the PETN to his crotch-leg area, then covered himself with a blanket. His body would have absorbed part of the blast.
Had the PETN explosion occurred according to plan and had it penetrated downward, there may indeed have been a “Christmas Day massacre”? seat 19A, where Abdulmutallab spent the flight, is conveniently located about 7 or 8 feet above the fuel tanks. From Abdulmutallab’s lap, the blast would have had to go through his body, the seat cushion, the aluminum and titanium floorboards, and a lot of plastic. If he’d placed the PETN on the floor next to the wall, he would have been more likely to succeed.

・・・In short, “Avatar” tells the tale of a disabled Marine, Jake Sully, who — through the wonders of movie magic — occupies the body of a 10-foot-tall alien so he can live among the mystical forest denizens of the moon world Pandora. Sully is sent in mufti(イスラムの法律学者), like a futuristic Lawrence of Arabia, to further the schemes of the evil corporate nature-rapists desperate to obtain the precious mineral “unobtainium” (no, really). Jake inevitably goes native, embraces the eco-faith of Pandora’s Na’Vi inhabitants and their tree goddess, the “all mother,” and rallies the Pandoran aborigines (not to mention the Pandoran ecosystem itself) against the evil forces of a thinly veiled 22nd century combine of Blackwater and Halliburton.
The film has been subjected to a sustained assault from many on the right, most notably by Ross Douthat in the New York Times, as an “apologia for pantheism.” Douthat’s criticisms hit the mark, but the most relevant point was raised by John Podhoretz in the Weekly Standard. Cameron wrote “Avatar,” says Podhoretz, “not to be controversial, but quite the opposite: He was making something he thought would be most pleasing to the greatest number of people.” ・・・
Nicholas Wade’s new book, “The Faith Instinct,”・・・argues that the Darwinian evolution of man depended not only on individual natural selection but also on the natural selection of groups. And groups that subscribe to a religious worldview are more apt to survive — and hence pass on their genes. Religious rules impose moral norms that facilitate collective survival in the name of a “cause larger than yourself,” to use a modern locution. It’s no wonder that everything from altruism to martyrdom is inextricably bound up in virtually every religion. ・・・
Robespierre(ロベスピエール), the French revolutionary who wanted to replace Christianity with a new “age of reason,” emphatically sought to exploit what he called the “religious instinct which imprints upon our souls the idea of a sanction given to moral precepts by a power that is higher than man.”

・・・while the English have a talent for deception and the Americans for technology, the Russians have a genuine genius for conspiracy — and the patience to play it out.
Thus, they recruited Americans who, first, spied for politics and later for money. In Britain they sought out the Cambridge aesthetes, who appear to have sold out their country because they’d made an aesthetic of betrayal.

・・・“Much of the tension between the two sides was initially created by the Official Language Act of 1956, making Sinhalese,… the official language of the country.” When the British left in 1948, Sri Lankans spoke Sinhalese, Tamil, and the “bridge language” of English. To Tamils, the Sinhalese-only law threatened “not only their language but their rights, their culture, and their status as equal citizens of Sri Lanka….” The initially peaceful protests quickly turned violent, resulting in a geographical separation with Tamils fleeing north, Sinhalese claiming the south. ・・・
Surprisingly, religion ? Sri Lanka is majority Buddhist ? “has never been a factor in this war.”

It is highly unusual for the prime minister, foreign minister and even the opposition leader to make a plea to a foreign government and then to be brushed off the way they were by China. Their pleas were ignored by the Chinese government and that points to a fundamental problem that is becoming increasingly frequent in dealings with China. China is a hypersensitive behemoth. Any time the country is criticized for its foreign policy (relations with rogue states, for example) or its domestic policies (its treatment of minorities in Tibet or Xinjiang(新疆), or human rights policies), it reacts aggressively. In simple political disputes, like currency policies or its obstructive moves during climate negotiations, it responds brusquely and with hostility. In its international dealings, China shows an immaturity that is no longer appropriate given its size and importance in the world. China warns against interference into internal matters, but that’s an absurd, empty phrase in an interwoven world in which domestic situations indeed play a role in decisions on investments and political cooperation.”
The center-right Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung writes:
”China has taken a liking to ignoring Western wishes and input. At the global climate conference in Copenhagen, it was the main saboteur. A dissident who found resonance abroad received a long prison sentence. And now a British citizen has been executed, despite several pleas for mercy by Gordon Brown and his government.”・・・
