<太田>

<太田>

 ・・・the <Chinese>military has become far more outspoken in recent months, frequently upstaging the foreign ministry and heightening concerns in the region and beyond about how China plans to use its economic muscle.・・・
 Mr. Gates and other top officials have complained in recent months about what they see as a split in China?between a PLA that, they say, thwarts efforts to improve relations with the U.S., and a political leadership that favors more cooperation.・・・
 ”The Chinese military is too powerful in decision-making, especially on foreign policy,” said Chu Shulong, an expert on international relations at Tsinghua University in Beijing. He said the main problem was that the 11-member Central Military Commission included only one civilian, its chairman, party chief Hu Jintao.

China borrowed much of its economic model from Japan: producing low-cost exports to fund investment at home while aggravating trading partners. ・・・
 Japan pioneered Asia’s export-driven growth model・・・
 Japan achieved this remarkable growth with a weak yen — which supported exports and discouraged imports — and high savings rates, which funded massive investments in infrastructure and manufacturing capacity. ・・・
  Consumption generally accounts for around 65 percent of GDP in most modern market economies, while investment in fixed assets such as infrastructure and manufacturing capacity makes up 15 percent. In 1970, Japan’s figures were 48 percent and 40 percent, respectively. ・・・
 A lot of Chinese people think that the United States forced Japan to appreciate in order to make the economy collapse and that it is trying to do the same thing to China,・・・
 ・・・world-class exporters existed alongside domestic companies that were “very tightly regulated with a lot of subsidies from the government, which makes them extremely uncompetitive.・・・
 Japan has been centrally planned since it was ruled by Gen. Douglas MacArthur, eventually morphing into an informal alliance between bureaucrats, business leaders, and elected officials known as the “iron triangle.” Difficult reforms were not in the triumvirate’s best interest. Bankruptcies and unemployment are never palatable, but they are intolerable for a ruling class whose legitimacy depends on engineering social harmony. ・・・
 In 1988, Japan’s foreign exchange reserves stood at 5 percent of Japanese GDP and 0.7 percent of global GDP, whereas China’s are now half of Chinese GDP and a full 5 percent of global GDP. Reserves of this magnitude have the potential to destabilize the Chinese and global economies.

The main argument of Petain’s defenders was to say that he protected French Jews. This argument has now fallen・・・
 The statute on Jews was a statute that was adopted without pressure from the Germans, without the request of the Germans: an indigenous statute,” Serge Klarsfeld, a veteran lawyer, told French radio. “And now we have decisive evidence that it was the desire of Marshal Ptain himself.・・・
 Led by the Vichy government, that state would go on to aid the deportation of 77,000 Jews to concentration camps until liberation in 1944.
Already an “extremely antisemitic” text that barred foreign Jews from large swaths of public sector jobs and other parts of society, the statute that emerged from Ptain’s office extended those measures to French Jews. The caveat protecting “descendants of Jews born French or naturalised before 1860” is clearly crossed out in the document brandished by Klarsfeld.

In his view, society emerged from the historical experience of a needy species driven to create conditions in which property, affection and opinions alike could be stably exchanged. Manners and morals, like goods, thus had an “economy.” The material and moral economies were, indeed, linked, in that a rising material prosperity helped to encourage civility and taste.
 if Smith’s economic ideas affronted the paternalism of the traditional Tory party, they were eventually taken up by William Pitt the Younger, the late-18th-century prime minister who is now seen as one of the fathers of free-market conservatism.・・・
