Further along the streets, they chased a boy up a tree because they believed he was a Uighur. “Someone said he was Han and managed to calm the crowd down. I think otherwise they would probably have killed him,” the witness added. Police bundled away several journalists “for their own safety”.・・・

・・・The main concern is safety. Journalists have been threatened by angry Han crowds, at times requiring police protection.

 中共=悪

・・・Many in the half-million-strong Uighur community in Central Asia allege that the unrest is a consequence of decades of repression by Beijing of Uighurs in Xinjiang, a Chinese region that borders both Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
Their anger is predictable given that the Uighur population living in Central Asia is descended from refugees who fled China in the 1930s and 1940s after two failed attempts in those decades to form an independent Uighur state. ・・・
Kazakhstan is home to 220,000 Uighurs, the biggest such community in Central Asia, with the rest of the population spread amongst the other mostly Turkic ex-Soviet republics of the region. ・・・
Kyrgyzstan, home to 50,000 Uighurs. ・・・
Kazakhstan Prime Minister Karim Massimov is ・・・ an ethnic Uighur.

・・・Turkey’s prime minister called for an end to “savagery” in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang that has killed at least 156 people, including many minority Uighurs who share ethnic bonds with Turks. ・・・
The reaction of the Turkish leaders echoed public anger in Turkey after local media and pro-Uighur associations suggested that most of the victims were Uighurs.

Chinese authorities seem to have been caught off-guard by the Han reaction.
In leaflets dropped over the Urumqi hot spots by helicopters this week, Wang Lequan (王樂泉) , the top Chinese official in Xinjiang, appealed specifically to the Han to stay calm.
“If the Han mobilize against innocent Uighur, not only is this wrong, but won’t it also upset all of the ethnic groups?” Wang, who is known for his tough rhetoric against Uighur “separatism,” said in the leaflet.

The investigation into the workers’ deaths, which some Uighurs felt was inadequate, sparked a demonstration in Urumqi on Sunday. The protest spun out of control as paramilitary troops fired on protesters and rioters torched cars and businesses.・・・

・・・Hundreds of Uighurs left the capital of China’s north-western Xinjiang region today in fear of further violence after days of inter-ethnic conflict.・・・
Urumqi’s population is predominantly Han Chinese, while in other towns such as Kashgar, in the south of Xinjiang, Uighurs make up as much as 90% of the population.

About 49% of Americans believe the Earth is getting warmer because of the burning of fossil fuels and other human activity, the survey by the Pew Research Centre and the American Association for the Advancement of Science said. Some 36% attributed global warming to natural changes in the atmosphere and another 10% said there was no clear evidence that the earth was indeed undergoing climate change.・・・
Only about 47% of the public views climate change as a very serious problem, a finding that has remained stable over the years, the survey said. In other public opinion polls over the years, climate change has ranked near the bottom of the list of pressing problems.・・・
Some 67% of Republicans either deny the existence of climate change or attribute the phenomenon to natural causes. In contrast, 64% of Democrats believe that the earth is getting warmer because of human activity.

Thursday’s rally <in Teheran> broke a nearly two-week stretch of quiet after a series mass protests against the official June 12 election results. This resurgence heightens speculation that this is a movement that will not be easily quelled — even by the state’s heavy hand.・・・
・・・In 1999, the movement … was a body without a head, without a strategy and without a cause that could mobilize other sectors of society
By contrast・・・this movement is driven by a diverse coalition including two former presidents, a former prime minister, the Islamic world’s most politically active women, ethnic minorities, sanctions-strapped businessmen, taxi drivers, famous filmmakers, and members of the national soccer team.
Such coalitions were a key part of the three major changes in 20th-century Iran, including the 1905-11 constitutional revolution, the 1953 Mossadeq period, and the 1979 revolution.・・・
・・・this movement, however diverse, is not looking to bring about another revolution.
Because t>hey’re talking about reforming it, refining it, and holding the officials accountable.”

The Japanese had little respect for soldiers who surrendered and, because Japan had not signed the Geneva Conventions on the fair treatment of prisoners of war, they did not worry much about those in their care. ・・・
those who remained alive were packed into overcrowded freighters called “hellships” and shipped to the Japanese mainland. Once again, food, water, medical care, and sanitation were inadequate and untold thousands died en route. In some cases, the prisoners were packed so tightly into dark cargo holds that they suffocated.・・・
