http://sankei.jp.msn.com/affairs/crime/100109/crm1001090124002-n1.htm

But UK experts warned other conflicting research had linked cannabis, and other cannabinoids, to an increased risk of depression and anxiety.

<太田>

Every age produces its own sort of fables, and our age seems to have produced The White Messiah fable.
This is the oft-repeated story about a manly young adventurer who goes into the wilderness in search of thrills and profit. But, once there, he meets the native people and finds that they are noble and spiritual and pure. And so he emerges as their Messiah, leading them on a righteous crusade against his own rotten civilization.
Avid moviegoers will remember “A Man Called Horse,” which began to establish the pattern, and “At Play in the Fields of the Lord.” More people will have seen “Dances With Wolves” or “The Last Samurai.”
Kids have been given their own pure versions of the fable, like “Pocahontas” and “FernGully.”・・・
Yet of all the directors who have used versions of the White Messiah formula over the years, no one has done so with as much exuberance as James Cameron in “Avatar.”・・・
The peace-loving natives ? compiled from a mlange of Native American, African, Vietnamese, Iraqi and other cultural fragments ? are like the peace-loving natives you’ve seen in a hundred other movies. They’re tall, muscular and admirably slender. They walk around nearly naked. They are phenomenal athletes and pretty good singers and dancers.・・・
It rests on the stereotype that white people are rationalist and technocratic while colonial victims are spiritual and athletic. It rests on the assumption that nonwhites need the White Messiah to lead their crusades. It rests on the assumption that illiteracy is the path to grace. It also creates a sort of two-edged cultural imperialism. Natives can either have their history shaped by cruel imperialists or benevolent ones, but either way, they are going to be supporting actors in our journey to self-admiration.

Informing the uneducated and unmedicated that their plight is all their own fault is followed up by instructions for making anything you desire–from a new TV screen to a trip to Mexico– “materialise” through mind control. The censorship of negative opinion combines perfectly with the American policy of each man for himself in the best of all possible worlds.
This is the philosophy that gave us the smart bomb, the space programme, sub-prime mortgages, plenty of psychopaths and Sarah Palin. Every dumb American idea we’ve all had to stomach and die for can be attributed to this devotion to fantasy and self-satisfaction.

<Ho(ホーチミン)> did not do things on Mao’s scale. But more than three decades of war, followed by sweeping collectivization, took a toll in the millions.
These Gods were once absolute and their exactions severe. So why are they revered still? I think above all because they asserted their countries’ nationhood, unity, pride and independence against Western colonization or foreign invasion and so delivered them forever from forms of humiliation.・・・

Akira Kurosawa made great samurai films. Kenji Mizoguchi filmed the lives of courtesans and geishas with the feel of classical Japanese painting. Yasujiro Ozu made films about middle-class families in Tokyo. Of these three masters of Japan’s cinematic golden age, which lasted from the 1930s till the 1960s・・・
The American director Paul Schrader once wrote a book entitled The Transcendental Style: Ozu, Bresson, Dreyer. He compared Ozu’s stillness to the minimalist styles of the European directors Robert Bresson and Carl Dreyer, and found a similar spiritual quality in all three. Another European comparison with Ozu’s films might be the still lifes and genre paintings of the 17th-century Dutch masters. Nothing much happens in a Vermeer painting, and yet, in the depiction of everyday life, everything happens.

Malbrouck s’en va-t-en guerre(=Marlborough Has Left for the War)”という、それぞれの戦闘的愛国歌がトルコ風にアレンジされて織り込まれています。
