Japan’s low fertility rate of barely 1.3 children per woman represents as much an existential threat to that country as the nuclear manoeuvrings of North Korea.・・・(A)
・・・If Canada has never really sounded the alarm about the low fertility rate, it’s because we had an antidote — immigration.・・・
<It is> discovered that the current influx of immigrants — about 0.67 per cent of the resident population — barely makes a dent.
The data show that the only way immigration could offset the declining birth rate is if Canada dismantles border controls and floods the country with well over a half million immigrants a year.
Even then, the government would need to impose rigid “age filters” to ensure that only young people are among the new arrivals.
This is radical stuff and therefore politically not feasible.・・・(A)
The brutal truth is this: The only surefire way to ensure women have lots of children is to deny them sexual equality.・・・
Equality has meant giving women opportunities for personal fulfilment beyond childrearing. It has meant that for women, social status is now derived from the same things as for men — educational achievement, professional advancement, accumulation of wealth.
Conversely, where women achieve status mainly through their role as matriarch you’ll find a high birthrate. You don’t have to travel to exotic places to find such societies. Right here in the West there are communities where women routinely have five, six, seven children, but these are almost always religious communities — devout Muslims, Orthodox Jews, serious Catholics and the like.・・・(A)

Britons lazier than ever, new health study finds・・・
One in six would rather watch a TV program they didn’t like than leave the sofa to change the channel if their remote control was broken. A third (36 percent) of the 2,000 adults surveyed for the study said they would not run to catch a bus and more than half (59 percent) would not walk up two flights of stairs to reach their office, choosing instead to take the elevator.
More than half of dog owners (52 percent) did not walk their dogs, and two-thirds (64 percent) of parents admit to always being too tired to play with their children.
Almost three-quarters (73 percent) of couples saying they regularly do not have enough energy at the end of the day to have sex, with more than half (58 percent) blaming a lack of fitness.

・・・a simplistic chorus for greater self-sufficiency in food. Such an approach is superficially appealing in a British context. Globally, however, it would be a recipe for disaster. ・・・
The challenges are different. Britain is relatively “food secure”. The issue is to make Britons eat more healthy food, rather than provide them with enough of it. More important, the global war on hunger is being lost. The number of chronically hungry people topped 1bn this year.・・・
The answer to this gathering global crisis does not lie in doomed attempts at autarky or in semi-feudal arrangements between consumer and producer countries. If global food markets become more shallow and (even) less stable, the trend towards food nationalism could become a stampede. That would be disastrous.
Instead, the focus must be on boosting global production, and on restoring confidence in global markets.

The adult entertainment business, centered in the San Fernando Valley, <California,> has weathered several recessions since it took off with the advent of home video in the 1980s. But this time the industry is not dealing with just a weakened economy. A growing abundance of free content on the Internet is undercutting consumers’ willingness to pay for porn, and with it the ability of many workers to earn a living in the business.・・・
Industry insiders estimate that since 2007, revenue for most adult production and distribution companies has declined 30% to 50% and the number of new films made has fallen sharply.・・・
At least five of the 100 top websites in the U.S. are portals for free pornography, referred to in the industry as “tube sites,” according to Internet traffic ranking service Alexa .com. Some of their content is amateur work uploaded by users and some is acquired from cheap back catalogs, but much of it is pirated.・・・
Frustratingly for porn producers and distributors in the Valley, none of these sites appears to be making much money. ・・・

・・・A typhoon-spawned mudslide engulfed a mountain village in southern Taiwan, burying up to 600 people・・・
In Japan, meanwhile, Typhoon Etau slammed into the west coast Monday. Twelve people were killed in raging floodwaters and landslides, and 10 others were missing, police said. (AP電)
