Donald Trump risks political backlash as deal grows more likely
On Sunday night, a tuxedo-clad Donald Trump, speaking to America’s state governors at their formal ball in Washington, suggested a deal to end trade tensions with China was nearly in the bag.
“If all works well, we’re going to have some very big news over the next week or two. And it’s really been terrific,” he said. “I tell you that the whole relationship has been outstanding,” he added, saying that there was just “a little ways to go”.
A few minutes earlier, the US president had announced via Twitter that he was delaying a new escalation in tariffs on Chinese imports, set for March 1, to give more time for negotiations given how much progress had been made. Mr Trump said the final details of any deal would be thrashed out at a new summit with Xi Jinping, his Chinese counterpart, at the US president’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
・・・Psychiatrists still do not know exactly what causes an individual to withdraw into an extreme reclusive state. Some say vulnerable individuals may have been bullied during adolescence, or never learned to cope with anger or the stresses of daily life. Dr. Kato said that Japan’s educational system, which emphasizes shame in its pursuit of conformity and can undermine personal confidence, may seed reclusive tendencies. “In the U.S., a child is encouraged to do things and self-esteem is high,” he said. “In Japanese culture and the educational system, children are not encouraged to develop high self-esteem.”・・・ https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/06/world/asia/japan-hikikomori-recluses.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage
・・・Messages soliciting prominent Chinese Twitter users to post propaganda for a payment. One proposal from a “cultural promotion media marketing agency” account bearing a photo of Japanese actress Kasumi Arimura asked the user to post text, accompanied by a photo or a video (all provided by the agency) for 400 to 2500 renminbi (about $60 to $360) per post.・・・ https://www.propublica.org/article/how-china-built-a-twitter-propaganda-machine-then-let-it-loose-on-coronavirus
South Korea has temporarily shut down a military hospital after medical workers showed symptoms of the coronavirus, raising fears of a new outbreak. Four staff at the hospital, located in Daejeon, central South Korea, have been quarantined, but each has tested negative for the virus in initial assessments, the defence ministry said on Monday.・・・ https://www.ft.com/content/853e3929-1810-33f5-9974-ef5286e0f909
・・・Humans could stop this, but Americans can't. You have to put others before yourself to stop this. You have to believe in the power of collective action to stop this. And we don't. We won't. We just give up.
I've been wondering why I'm spending so much time and effort caring about the health and safety of strangers when they don't give a damn about mine.
The conversion of Khazars to Judaism is reported by external sources and in the Khazar Correspondence, although doubts persist. Hebrew documents, whose authenticity was long doubted and challenged, are now widely accepted by specialists as either authentic or as reflecting internal Khazar traditions. Archaeological evidence for conversion, on the other hand, remains elusive, and may reflect either the incompleteness of excavations, or that the stratum of actual adherents was thin. Conversion of steppe or peripheral tribes to a universal religion is a fairly well attested phenomenon, and the Khazar conversion to Judaism, although unusual, would not have been unique. Other scholars have concluded that the conversion of the Khazar elite to Judaism never happened. A few scholars, Moshe Gil, recently seconded by Shaul Stampfer, dismiss the conversion as a myth. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khazars#Judaism

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is seeking to appoint the far-right Serhiy Sternenko as head of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) in Odessa, in an attempt to further his alliance with neo-Nazi forces. Operating in Ukraine are several nationalist paramilitary groups, such as the Azov movement and Right Sector, that espouse neo-Nazi ideology. <米国等> ・・・the Russian premier has a fervent fanbase among the far right in the west. Why is this? They love what he has done with Russia. They love the way he has dismantled women’s rights. They love his attacks on gay and transgender people. They love his dismissal of western liberalism. Their values align perfectly. There is also a whiff of antisemitism in the right’s support for Putin. On Sunday, for example, Wendy Rogers, a Republican state senator in Arizona, tweeted about the Ukrainian president: “[Volodymyr] Zelensky is a globalist puppet for Soros and the Clintons.” “Globalist” and “Soros” are well-established dog whistles, of course. (Zelenskiy is Jewish.) It is not just the racism, homophobia and misogyny that the right love about Putin: it is also his muscle. ↓> ・・・but there are also a number of liberals who seem to think that Putin is uniquely bad. They are quick to rationalise invasions and occupations when a western country or a western ally is the aggressor. Many liberals care deeply about Ukrainians, as we all should, but aren’t quite so bothered about Yemenis, Syrians or Palestinians. The west should condemn Putin – but it could also do with thinking more deeply about its own actions. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/mar/01/why-does-putin-have-superfans-among-the-us-right-wing
